Medieval castles, often romanticized as places of chivalry and opulence, were actually challenging environments. Built for defense, they were dark, cold, and uncomfortable. Inhabitants, mostly servants and soldiers, lived in cramped conditions with poor hygiene. Castles were administrative centers and symbols of authority, constantly under threat of siege. Despite their protective role, life inside was marked by hard work, strict hierarchies, and the threat of violence.
