James Farmer Jr., a pivotal civil rights leader, was born in 1920 in Texas. He joined Wiley College's debate team and later studied at Howard University, where he was inspired by nonviolent philosophies. Farmer co-founded the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) and organized significant civil rights actions, including sit-ins and the Freedom Rides. His efforts contributed to the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Despite his achievements, Farmer felt his contributions were underrecognized. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1998. Farmer's legacy is a testament to the power of nonviolent protest in achieving social change.
