Angel Island in San Francisco Bay served as a major immigration station from 1910 to 1940, processing over half a million people, mainly of Asian descent. Unlike Ellis Island, Angel Island was known for its harsh conditions and lengthy detentions, especially for Chinese immigrants due to the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882. This act severely restricted Chinese immigration, leading to overcrowded and unsanitary conditions on the island. Immigrants faced invasive medical exams and exhaustive interrogations, with some detained for years. Angel Island closed in 1940 and is now a state park, preserving the history and struggles of those who sought the American dream.
