After WWII, Hungary was under a Stalinist dictatorship. Reforms by Prime Minister Imran Nadia led to Soviet tightening of control. Protests erupted in Budapest, leading to an armed uprising. Despite initial success and a temporary ceasefire, the Soviets crushed the revolution. However, the uprising resulted in more liberal policies in Hungary compared to other Eastern Bloc countries.
