The Srivijaya kingdom, based on Sumatra, was a wealthy maritime empire from 200 CE to 1400 CE. It controlled key trade routes, accumulating wealth through transit taxes on luxury goods. Srivijaya was a center of Buddhist learning, influencing surrounding regions. Despite its prosperity, it faced invasions, notably from the Chola Empire, and eventually declined due to internal and external pressures, including the spread of Islam. By 1400, Srivijaya had disappeared from the map.
