In the early 1800s, Texas was under Spanish control, but American settlers were eager to claim it. The Louisiana Purchase excluded Texas, leading to illegal crossings by fortune seekers known as filibusters. These individuals, inspired by Texas's natural wealth, attempted to establish an independent republic. Notable efforts included the Magee-Gutierrez expedition and James Long's campaign. Despite initial successes, the filibusters were ultimately defeated, particularly in the Battle of Medina. In 1821, Mexico gained independence, changing Texas's political landscape, but the dream of a free Texas persisted.
