Post-WWII, Germany was divided into four zones by the Allies. Berlin, located in the Soviet zone, became a focal point of Cold War tensions. In 1948, Stalin initiated the Berlin Blockade, cutting off land access to West Berlin. The US and UK responded with the Berlin Airlift, supplying the city by air. The blockade ended in 1949, leading to the permanent division of Germany into East and West. This period also saw the formation of NATO and the Warsaw Pact, as well as significant communist advances, including the Soviet atomic bomb test and Mao Zedong's victory in China.
