As of the end of 2023, the US military budget stands at $916 billion, the highest globally, accounting for 40% of worldwide military spending. The US spends more than the next eight largest spenders combined. In an invasion scenario, invoking the Defense Production Act could further increase this budget. Historically, during the Vietnam War, the US spent over 9% of its GDP on the military, which is nearly three times the current percentage. If the US were to return to Vietnam War-era spending levels, the budget would rise to approximately $2.4 trillion annually.
