In September 1939, as war breaks out in Europe, the Nazis target modern art, labeling it degenerate. Peggy Guggenheim, a Jewish art collector in Paris, buys art directly from artists to protect it from Nazi hands. By 1940, she has amassed over 50 works. As the Nazis invade France, she smuggles her collection to New York disguised as household items. Peggy escapes to the U.S. with her family and artist Max Ernst, whom she marries. In New York, she opens the 'Art of This Century' gallery, showcasing avant-garde art and influencing American art movements.
