In the 18th century, the Appalachian Mountains were a major barrier for settlers heading west. In 1750, Dr. Thomas Walker discovered the Cumberland Gap, a passage through the mountains. In 1775, Daniel Boone, hired by Richard Henderson, created the Wilderness Road through the Gap, facilitating westward expansion. Boone established Boonsboro, a settlement that faced attacks from the Shawnee tribe. Boone was captured but escaped to warn settlers of an impending attack, which they successfully repelled. Boone's adventures became legendary, cementing his status as a frontier hero.
