The Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, established in 1800, is the oldest in the US. During WWII, it employed 25,000 workers and produced 70 submarines. Now a repair facility for nuclear subs, it is located in Maine despite its name. A land dispute over its location between New Hampshire and Maine reached the Supreme Court in 2001. Historically, Portsmouth was protected by forts, with Fort William and Mary playing a role in the American Revolution when Paul Revere warned of British ships. The fort was later renamed Fort Constitution.
