In Rio de Janeiro's violent north, a joint police and army operation targeted drug trafficking in seven favelas. Despite the operation, 20 arrests were made, but a soldier's leak compromised the surprise element. The soldier, aged 19, was arrested for criminal association. This was the third such operation since August, involving 5,000 soldiers. Rio faces increasing violence, with 100 police deaths this year and 185 officers accused of collaborating with drug gangs. The city recorded its highest violence level since 2009, 15% higher than in 2016.
