The Nicaraguan Congress approved a controversial constitutional reform allowing President Daniel Ortega to seek a fourth term in 2016. The reform, supported by Sandinista deputies and an ally, removes presidential re-election limits and permits police and military to hold government positions. Ortega, first elected in 1984, returned to power in 2007 and extended his mandate in 2012 through a disputed court ruling. Protests erupted against the reform, seen as a move to extend Ortega's rule. The reform requires approval in two legislative sessions to take effect.
