However, the Federal Electoral Institute claimed it was one of the most controlled elections, with modern systems and international observers. Preliminary results showed Peña Nieto leading with 38.1% of votes, while López Obrador had 31.7%. In 2006, López Obrador also contested election results, leading a protest in Mexico City.
