The Devil Half Acre

Lumpkins Jail, operated by Robert Lumpkin, was a notorious slave trading post in Richmond from the 1830s until the end of the Civil War. It was the largest slaveholding facility in the area, where enslaved people were held for sale or punishment. The complex included a boarding house for traders and was located near the state capital. After the Civil War, Robert's widow, Mary, inherited the property. Today, it is part of the Richmond Slave Trail, marking its historical significance.
