Terrance Atkinson regularly visits his wife Daphne, who resides in a nursing home due to advanced Alzheimer's disease. Her condition began 12 years ago with forgetfulness and has progressively worsened. Daphne, once an extroverted and sociable person, has become introverted, which has been difficult for friends to understand. In the UK, nearly 700,000 people have dementia, with numbers expected to rise to a million by 2021. The disease currently costs the UK £23 billion annually, surpassing the costs of cancer, heart disease, and stroke.
