In the mid-20th century, electroshock therapy was used to treat severe depression by inducing seizures through electrical currents. Despite its effectiveness, it had severe side effects, leading to public resistance and a decline in use. However, it was found to alleviate depression in many patients. Over time, the therapy was refined to reduce side effects, leading to the modern electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), which still causes some side effects but is effective in treating depression. ECT's success has led to the exploration of electrical therapies for other brain disorders, such as Parkinson's disease, by interrupting abnormal electrical activity. Continued research may expand its benefits to more conditions.
