Humberstone was once a bustling city in northern Chile, thriving on the salitre industry. It had a population of 3,700 and offered various services, ensuring a comfortable life for its residents. However, the advent of synthetic salitre led to a crisis, causing unemployment and abandonment. By 1956, Humberstone was largely deserted, transforming into a ghost town. In 2005, UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site, and it now serves as an open-air museum, with security guards as its only inhabitants.
