Right-wing politicians in Peru requested to see the body of Abimael Guzmán, the leader of the guerrilla group Sendero Luminoso, who died in prison. His body remains in a morgue while authorities decide whether to release it to his imprisoned widow. Politicians demand verification of the body and suggest incineration to prevent a future monument. Guzmán died of bilateral pneumonia in a high-security naval prison, where he was serving a life sentence since 1992. A former philosophy professor, Guzmán was the intellectual author of a violent conflict in Latin America, resulting in 70,000 deaths according to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
