They enter a state called anhydrobiosis, where their bodies dry out, pausing life processes. Despite DNA damage, rotifers can repair it upon rehydration, possibly using proteins that remain intact. They also engage in horizontal gene transfer, acquiring genes from other organisms, which may aid in their survival. This unique ability allows them to potentially construct new biochemical pathways, making them exceptional survivors in the animal kingdom.
