China dumped 27 percent more waste into the ocean in 2018

In 2018, China dumped 1,000,000 cubic meters of waste into its coastal waters, marking a 20.7% increase from 2017. The waste, primarily plastic, was mostly found in the Delta regions of the Youngs and Pearl Rivers. This action is part of an effort to clean up rivers by discarding trash into the ocean. China plans to designate 30% of its coastal waters as off-limits for development under the Ecological Red Line scheme.
