Herbert Hoover, after completing his last public service as chairman of the Hoover Commission, retires to private life. His public service began in WWI as Allied Food Administrator and continued post-war as director of European relief. In 1929, he became the 31st President of the United States, facing the Great Depression. After leaving office in 1933, he remained active in world affairs, including a survey in Poland for President Truman. At 81, Hoover plans to retire to the West Coast and go fishing.
