NASA’s new tool for finding Earth-killing asteroids

The NEO Surveyor mission aims to launch by 2026, featuring a 6-meter space telescope using infrared imaging to enhance the detection of large objects that could impact Earth. Currently, astronomers rely on ground-based telescopes to find Near-Earth Objects (NEOs) at night, but these cannot detect objects coming from the sun's direction. The NEO Surveyor will address this gap by using infrared sensors to find NEOs during the day, improving our ability to predict and prevent potential impacts like the undetected Chelyabinsk meteor in 2013.
