Earth's interior taking in more seawater than previous thought, study finds

Research around the Mariana Trench shows that the Earth is absorbing more water than previously estimated. Scientists used seismographs to study the area, revealing that the Pacific plate is sliding under the Mariana plate, allowing seawater to seep into the Earth's crust. This water may transform into hydrous minerals due to high pressure and temperature, eventually sinking deeper into the mantle.
