Iceland conducted trials of a shorter workweek involving 2,500 workers, over 1% of its workforce, during the pandemic. The trials were a success, showing that workers could maintain productivity and improve well-being while working fewer hours. Flexibility from both employees and employers was key, with some adjustments needed. The trials were partly motivated by Iceland's long working hours, averaging 44.4 hours per week, the third highest in Eurostat countries in 2018.
