On May 1st, Venezuelans were split between those critical of government policies and those supporting President Nicolás Maduro. In Caracas, 3,000 protesters opposed a 30% salary increase, citing inflation and food shortages. The official minimum wage of $675 only buys $60 on the parallel market. The government, however, highlighted low unemployment as a reason to celebrate on Labor Day.
