Alejandro Maldonado, the new president of Guatemala, received military honors after replacing Otto Pérez, who resigned amid corruption charges. The ceremony coincided with the closing of the election campaign, where Guatemalans will vote for a new president and other officials. Leading the polls is Jimmy Morales, followed by Manuel Baldizón and Sandra Torres. Maldonado will serve as interim president until January. Nobel laureate Rigoberta Menchú urged Maldonado to heed public protests against corruption. Meanwhile, Otto Pérez denied leading a customs fraud network and remains in custody.
