The US envoy to South Sudan, Donald Wood, announced that President Salva Kiir is ready to negotiate with his rival, Riek Machar, to end the ongoing conflict. The conflict began when Kiir accused Machar of attempting a coup. The violence has resulted in hundreds of deaths and thousands seeking refuge at UN sites. The UN and global leaders are working to prevent a civil war in South Sudan, which gained independence from Sudan just two and a half years ago.
