In Chapter 21 of 'The Wonderful Wizard of Oz', the travelers find themselves in a challenging landscape of bogs and marshes before entering a beautiful yet ominous forest. The lion expresses his desire to live there, but Dorothy is cautious of wild beasts. They soon encounter a gathering of animals troubled by a giant spider monster. The lion, being the bravest, agrees to defeat the monster in exchange for being crowned king of the forest. He successfully kills the spider while it sleeps, and the animals rejoice, promising to follow him as their king. The lion assures them he will return to rule once Dorothy is safely on her way to Kansas.
