By second grade, students should be moving from drawing every object to using more efficient representations — arrays, grouped tallies, or simple diagrams. A useful teaching move is to present the same sharing scenario two ways: "8 stickers shared among 4 friends" as a drawing, then as a repeated subtraction (8 − 2 − 2 − 2 − 2 = 0). That connection between equal sharing and repeated subtraction is the conceptual bridge to formal division in Grade 3.

Grade 2 students are ready for: word problems with numbers up to 20 or so, problems that ask both "how many in each group" and "how many groups" (both interpretations of division), and problems that connect sharing to multiplication facts they're beginning to learn. The most persistent error at this grade is confusing the two questions division can ask. They're pattern-matching rather than reasoning. Varying the unknown (sometimes the group size, sometimes the number of groups) in practice problems is the most direct fix.
