In 2nd grade, students should have mastered the sequence and spelling of the twelve months. The focus shifts to application, such as using a calendar to find dates, understanding abbreviations (e.g., Jan. for January), and knowing the number of days in each month.

Move into practical application. Give students calendars and ask them to solve problems like, "What is the date three weeks after October 5th?" Introduce the standard abbreviations for each month and practice using them. The classic "30 days have September..." poem is especially useful at this grade level.

Worksheets that require students to use a calendar to answer questions are ideal. Activities can include writing the correct abbreviation for each month, ordering months by their number of days, or solving simple word problems involving dates and seasons.

Second graders may still make spelling errors on longer month names. They also commonly forget which months have 30 or 31 days and the special case of February. When using a calendar, they might miscount weeks or days.
