Begin with a quick review of titles, headings, categories, and units, then shift attention to relationships within the data. Think aloud while comparing rows, finding differences, and supporting a conclusion with specific values. Have students explain which cells they used so their reasoning is visible.

Give students raw class data to organize into a table, then ask them to compare categories and describe a pattern. Follow with questions that require two or more entries, such as finding a combined total or determining the difference between groups. Creating their own questions is an effective final check.

Watch for three patterns: mixing up rows and columns, ignoring units, and making a claim from one value instead of considering the full data set. Students may also perform the correct calculation on the wrong cells. Requiring them to mark the entries used before solving helps isolate whether the difficulty is interpretation or computation.
