God created human beings in his image and likeness, meaning that we are called to live in an intimate relationship with God. This is shown to us by God walking with Adam and Eve in the garden.
Our first parents ignored God but God gave them another chance. He made a plan that, when fulfilled, made it possible for people to enter into a new and everlasting relationship with God.
When God called Abraham (Abram) and told him to leave the country and go to a land that he would show him, Abraham obeyed God. Both Abraham (Father of many nations) and his wife Sarah (Sarai – my princess) were old and had no kids yet Abram believed God when he told him that he would be Father of a great nation. Isaac was born and God’s promise to Abraham began to be fulfilled.
Isaac had Jacob who had (a) sons, among them Joseph who was sold by his brothers. Joseph ended in Egypt. Despite great difficulties, he realized that God was with him. He became the Pharaoh’s right hand man. When a famine struck his birthland, his father and his brothers emigrated to Egypt where they were well received. They experienced God’s great love for them. Many years passed and the new Pharaoh feared that the Israelites had grown too big and could be a threat to Egypt. So he enslaved them. God showed them that he was with them by sending Moses to free them.
They travelled in the desert but God gave them food and water. God entered into a special covenant with them. He was to be their God and they his people. God was with them when they entered the Promised Land. He sent them Samson and Deborah who became known as the Judges. The Judges (special people appointed by God) were holy men and one woman who led the people in battles and helped the people serve God. When there was a judge, the people obeyed God and God helped the people in their battles against their enemies. But, when there was no judge, the people forgot God and God allowed their enemies to be strong. So, the people asked God to help. And then, God appointed another judge.
After a time, the Jewish people wanted a king. God, through prophet Samuel, anointed Saul king but he was not loyal to God and David was chosen King. God sent prophets (like Nathan) to advise kings and the people and to warn them to correct their behavior when they strayed away from him.
Even when the nation was conquered by the Assyrians and the Babylonians, God did not forget them but guided them so that this bitter experience of the exile became an opportunity for them to grow. They came to know God and his plan better.
God’s journey with the people of Israel reached its climax when the promises he made to Abraham, Moses, David and the prophets were fulfilled in Jesus , the son of God who became man and gave his life for us. Through his Resurrection and the giving of the Holy Spirit, every person can become one with God, our Creator.

1. Wind – On Pentecost Sunday, Holy Spirit descended on the Apostles. There was a loud noise from sky that sounded like a strong wind blowing. We cannot see the wind but can feel its effects. Although we cannot see the Holy Spirit we can feel the effect of his work in us and in those around us.
2. Fire – Holy Spirit descended on Apostles in the form of tonfues of fire. Fire can change things (e.g. baking cake, clay), purifies metals (gold, silver). Holy Spirit cleanses us from our sins and our faults. He can give us new characteristics and makes us better people.
3. Dove – During Baptism of Jesus, by John the Baptist, the Holy Spirit came down upon him like a dove. The dove is a symbol of peace. In Genesis, it was a dove that showed Noah that peace between God and humankind has been restored. Holy Spirit is God within us who gives us true peace and the virtues we need to live in peace with one another.
