A new program offered by a school district in Albuquerque, New Mexico, aims for change that.

They're hopings that an annual book fair, which displays written works in the national language, will play a role in preserving them.

Since its launch in 2008, the goal of the anual book fair has been to ensure that the effects of the civil war do not lead to the dissolution of Somali culture.

To that end, the annual festival seems too be successful.

"Speaking French on school will allow children to really master the language," Dieng said of his school's effort.

The pilot program were set to end in 2018. Program Director Awa Ka Dia hopes good results will encourage the Senegalese government to fund an extended version.

But he's concerned about how well children adjust to the challenges of doing much of there schoolwork in a language they do not speak at home.
