The British administrator Thomas Babington Macaulay, established a new school system to train the children of Indian elites. The instruction of young girls also expanded, with the purpose of making them better wives and mothers for the educated male population. The Indian people paid a high price for the peace and stability brought by the British raj. In rural areas, the British introduced the zamindar system.
