ALI'S STORY

Attending the Center

Ali decided that he wanted (1. study) _________________ abroad. (2. achieve) _________________ his goal, he had many things that he had (3. do) _________________ . Firstly he needed (4. improve) _________________ his English so he could take the IELTS test. Unfortunately Ali disliked (5. learn) _________________ English so this would not be much fun. His friend recommended (6. attend) _________________ a center close to his house. Ali went to look and from what he could see it seemed (7. be) _________________ a good center. He didn't delay (8. register) _________________ for a course. He managed (9. get)_________________ a good price for the course because they had a special offer on. This was good because he could not afford (10. pay) _________________ too much.

Studying

He had never read much in his life and knew he was weak in this area, so he practiced (11. read) _________________ as much as he could. He hated (12. write) _________________ in English too as his grammar was quite weak so he also planned (13. practice) _________________ writing as many essays as possible. His teachers agreed (14. check) _________________ these for him. As it turned out, Ali actually really enjoyed (15. study) _________________ English. The other students on the course didn't hesitate (16. help) _________________ Ali and the teachers always offered (17.assist) _________________ him if he was stuck. He kept up his studying for a number of months because he wouldn't risk (18.sit) _________________ the exam until he was ready.

Taking the Test

Then came the time for Ali (19. take) _________________ the test. His teacher had recommended (20. do) _________________ the Task 2 first in the writing so he followed those instructions. He finished (21. write) _________________ his Task 2 after exactly 40 minutes and then went on to the Task 1. The speaking test seemed (22. go) _________________ quite well even though he was nervous. He can recall (23. ask) _________________ the examiner at the end how well he had done but she refused (23. tell) _________________ him. Then came the time for his result. He had expected (24. get) _________________ a band 5.5 but he was surprised (25. find) _________________ out that he had been given a band 6.

The Result

So Ali could now go and study abroad. Although he was happy, unfortunately it did mean (26.leave) _________________ his wife and children for a year. He knew he would miss (27. see) _________________ them every day but his parents offered (28. take) _________________ care of them and promised (29. make) _________________ sure they were safe.

Bill Bryson

I was born in the United States but I have written several travel books about England. I lived there with my wife and four children for 20 years, but for the last three years we have lived in the United States. Our children are now learning about life in the United States. I'm sure they will be happier because they have lived in two countries. I like Britain and I want to return, but my daughter, Felicity, is going to start college here soon, so it won't be for another four years.

I have just been to England for six weeks to work on a radio programme about the English language and also to talk about the book I've just written. Most writers don't like doing this; they don't like travelling around the country, selling their book. I don't mind it. I like visiting new places and meeting lots of people. It's very different from the life I have in the United States when I'm writing. In England, people drove me around in big cars and I stayed in expensive hotels. It was good because I didn't have to pay any bills. Everyone was kind to me and it was fun.
