The textbook definition of the “top ten percent” refers to the group of students in a graduating class who rank in the highest 10% academically, based on their grade point averages (GPA).
To calculate it:
• If there are 100 students, the top 10 students are in the top ten percent.
Was Mr. Estrada in the top 10% of his class?
Yes, he was 33/333 and that’s technically in the top 9.90%. In other words, better than 91.1% of his graduating class.
No, we wasn’t that SMART
No, he missed it by 1.1%
Who was #34/333…? I’ll guess we’ll never know
How did he get such a high GPA?! 98.789 is nearly perfect. Did he ever touch grass?
He took Advanced Placement courses. Advanced classes add extra points to your grade. A 90 in Calculus (math) is actually a 100. Mr. Estrada actually averaged a 89 in calculus. It was tough.
He got 100s in all his electives. It wasn’t too hard since he was first chair cello in orchestra and always went to all the rehearsals and performances. And he always turned in all his work on time in his design classes.
His parents let him focus on school and never let him get a part time job or go to any parties (sometimes he would sneak out shhh…), but they always supported him no matter what and went to all his concerts, competitions, ceremonies, swim meets, football games, soccer games, baseball games, basketball games, science fairs, everything. They never missed a single one. When I got to college I really felt that.
He never gave up. In fact he made a come back. His freshman year in high school he forgot to turn in some homework that he missed while out competing at the regional swim meet. He hoped his teacher wouldn’t remember or maybe not grade it but his grade in English that grading period was a 78…That was the only grading period and the only bad grade he ever got in high school but it was enough to bump him off the top 10% GPA list. From then on he committed himself to getting all 90s and above in his Advanced classes and perfect 100s in electives. It took him almost 3 years but by the end of his senior year, he bumped whoever was #33 out of 333 graduating students and took his spot. Some of his friends had 100 and 101 or 102 GPA. We were all a little competitive nerds, and they also helped him keep his GPA up.
