There was a time, not too long ago, when employers were in such a rush to hire workers that they were doing anything they could to make it easier for people to apply. That time has passed. Job hunting was becoming more miserable even before the pandemic, as the amount of time companies took to hire stretched out and as they asked candidates to undergo more and more interviews. Labour shortages during the pandemic gave a temporary relief, but now, as fears about a recession grow, companies are going back to their old habits of putting candidates through a gruelling process. “It's frustrating and tiring—job hunting has never been this hard,” says Michael Cook, who was laid off from a gaming company in December after more than a decade in the professional labour market, and who has applied to hundreds of jobs since. One company had him go through six rounds of interviews over multiple months; another asked him to create a project that they then used on their website but didn’t pay him for his work; others sent him take-home tests or asked him to record videos of himself answering pre-set questions. He has not received any offers. Part of the difficulty comes from a tightening labour market especially in fields like tech that have had hundreds of thousands of layoffs in the last nine months. There is now, on average, one job opening for every two applicants on LinkedIn, a big change from early 2022, when there was one job opening per applicant on average. But it’s not just the economy causing companies to change their hiring processes in ways that make them take longer, says Peter Cappelli, a management professor at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. The pandemic increased the use of one-way video interviews, in which applicants are asked to record a video of themselves answering a list of pre-set questions, because interviews couldn’t be done in person. But these interviews just give companies a lot more content to sort through. Adapted from: https://time.com/6287012/why-finding-job-is-difficult/

Job interviews can be challenging, but with the right preparation, you can significantly increase your chances of success. One of the most crucial steps is to research the company thoroughly. Understanding their mission, values, and recent achievements will help you tailor your answers to align with their goals. This effort shows the interviewers that you are genuinely interested in the position and that you've taken the time to learn about them. Practicing common interview questions is another essential tip. Questions like "Tell me about yourself" or "What are your strengths and weaknesses?" are often asked, and having well-prepared responses will make you feel more confident. It’s also wise to prepare a few questions to ask them about the role or the company. This not only shows your engagement but also helps you determine if the job is the right fit for you. Dressing appropriately and arriving early are simple yet effective ways to make a good impression. First impressions matter, so wearing professional attire and being punctual demonstrate respect for the interview process. Arriving a few minutes early also gives you time to relax and compose yourself before the interview begins. During the interview, maintain a positive and confident attitude, even if you feel nervous. They are evaluating not just your skills but also how you handle pressure and interact with others. By following these tips, you can approach your interview with confidence and increase your chances of securing the job. Preparation and a positive mindset are key to making a strong impression. Around the world, there are some jobs that may seem quite strange and surprising to you.

A. Train pushers

In Japan, the railway system is huge and everyone there uses trains. This makes them overcrowded most of the time. During rush hour, railway station attendants called 'pushers' or 'oshiya' do the strangest job in the world - they push passengers into trains. They have to do this because of the large number of commuters who wish to arrive at their desired locations on time. That's why they must endure the pain in squeezing themselves inside the train.

B. Cleaners of the world's highest building

Have you ever wondered how the world's tallest building, Burj Khalifa, in Dubai, is cleaned? It takes a team of 36 window cleaners a total of three months to clean the tower's reflective windows. Working from the height of more than 800 metres, the cleaners face huge challenges especially during bad weather. They must be the bravest cleaners in the world.

C. Golf balls divers

Every year in the UK, millions of golf balls get lost in the water around golf courses. This gave rise to the demand for golf ball divers whose job is to dive deep into the lakes and ponds around golf courses to find the lost balls. Most of them are professional scuba divers, but they spend long hours crawling around in mud and carrying heavy buckets. On average, they find 5,000 balls per lake. After cleaning them, they resell or recycle the balls. Sounds dangerous, doesn't it?
