Addition Strategies Quizzes

Model several approaches—such as counting on, making 10, decomposing numbers, using doubles, and adding by place value—and compare how each solves the same problem. Then ask students to choose a strategy, show their reasoning with a model or equation, and explain why it is efficient for those addends.

Use problem sets that require making 10, doubles plus 1, composing and decomposing numbers, partial sums, repeated addition, number lines, and base-ten representations. Include comparison tasks in which students solve one problem in two ways and decide which method is more efficient.

Students may apply a familiar strategy even when it is inefficient, decompose a number without preserving its value, or lose track of place value when using partial sums. Requiring an equation or visual model for each step makes these errors visible and helps teachers distinguish conceptual gaps from calculation slips.
