1st Grade Addition Strategies Quizzes

Connect each strategy to the numbers that make it useful. For 8 + 5, show how moving 2 from the 5 makes 10 + 3; for 6 + 7, use a known double such as 6 + 6 and add 1. Let students compare methods before asking them to choose one independently.

Mix three types of practice: matching equations to models, completing a partly shown strategy, and solving facts with a strategy of the student's choice. A few carefully selected problems are more useful than a page of unrelated facts.

First graders may count on from the smaller addend, lose track while hopping on a number line, or apply doubles plus 1 without adjusting the extra amount. Ask them to label each step and verify the sum with a ten frame or a different strategy.
