2nd Grade Number Sense Quizzes

Second grade significantly expands on place value, extending it to three-digit numbers up to 1,000. Students learn to read, write, compare, and order these larger numbers. They also begin skip-counting by 5s, 10s, and 100s, and are often introduced to the foundational skill of rounding to the nearest 10 and 100.

Using an open number line is a powerful visual strategy. To round 67 to the nearest 10, have students mark the 'benchmark' tens of 60 and 70 on the line. Then, they place 67 on the line and can visually see that it is closer to 70. This approach builds conceptual understanding before teaching a procedural rule.

Practice should connect different representations of a number. Provide a number like 345 and ask students to: 1) write it in expanded form (300 + 40 + 5), 2) write the number name (three hundred forty-five), and 3) draw it using base-ten blocks. This reinforces the value of each digit.

Students sometimes focus on the wrong place value. For example, when comparing 489 and 512, a student might incorrectly say 489 is larger because it has an 8 in the tens place and 9 in the ones place. This shows they are not yet consistently starting their comparison with the largest place value (the hundreds).
