4th Grade Number Sense Quizzes

Connect each number to several representations: standard form, expanded form, a place-value model, and a number-line position. Ask students to explain how moving a digit one place left changes its value, then apply that understanding to comparing, rounding, and estimating with multi-digit numbers.

Use a mix of place-value puzzles, number-line tasks, comparison problems, and rounding challenges. For example, give students 387,462 and ask them to write it in expanded form, identify the value of 7, round it to the nearest thousand, and place it between two benchmark numbers.

Watch for students who compare numbers by individual digits instead of place value, treat a digit as having the same value in every position, or round using the wrong neighboring benchmarks. Having them model the number or mark it on a number line usually reveals the source of the error.

Common Core develops Grade 4 number sense around the base-ten system: students extend place-value understanding to larger whole numbers, compare them, and round to any place. That work builds from earlier three-digit place value and prepares students to reason about decimals and powers-of-ten relationships in Grade 5.

Use wider spacing or a larger font for students who lose their place in multi-digit numbers, and create translated versions for multilingual learners. In a digital session, reduced answer choices can make comparison and place-value questions more manageable without changing the skill being assessed.

A fourth grader should be able to read, write, compare, and round multi-digit whole numbers; explain the value of a digit based on its position; and use estimation to judge whether an answer is reasonable. Number patterns and relationships between adjacent place values are also central at this grade.
