Teach the skill as part of algebraic work rather than as an isolated review. Model how to rewrite mixed numbers, choose a useful common denominator, and apply order of operations in a complex expression, then require students to justify each transformation.

Prioritize progressively challenging expressions that combine fractions, decimals, integers, mixed numbers, and grouping symbols. A useful sequence is: calculate one operation, evaluate a mixed-operation expression, then solve a short application in which students must select the operations themselves.
