6th Grade Square Roots Quizzes

Connect three representations: a square model, a multiplication equation, and radical notation. For example, a square with area 100 has side length 10, 10 × 10 = 100, and √100 = 10. Then contrast perfect squares with values such as √30, which lies between 5 and 6.

Start with recognizing perfect squares and finding exact whole-number roots. Next, have students locate non-perfect roots between consecutive integers and apply roots to missing side lengths in square-area problems.

Students may treat √36 as 36 ÷ 2, say √20 = 10, or round a non-perfect root without first finding its bounds. Require two checks: square the proposed exact answer and compare non-perfect roots with neighboring perfect squares.
