Chinese and Indians were offered a contract to work on the plantations for 5 years. They were free to work anywhere they chose after the contract ended. At the end of the contract, they were offered free passage back to their homeland or they could remain here.

1. 1. A bonded contract to work on a plantation for 5 years.
   2. There was free passage by ship to the Caribbean
   3. For the first 3 years a labourer had to stay on the plantation, after 3 years they could move to another plantation
   4. Wages were paid by the plantation owner
   5. The plantation owners provided housing, flour, rice, peas and oil, but charged high prices for them
   6. The contract was initially for 5 years, but it was later extended to 10 years.
   7. At first, they could go back to India free of cost, but the wicked plantation owner said no and they had to find their own money if they wanted to go back home.

2. 8. In some countries they were offered small plots of land if they stayed.
