There are two areas where all nouns and adjectives MUST agree

  • NUMBER - (Is it singular or plural)

  • GENDER - (Is it masculine or feminine)

There are three different options for adjective placement in Spanish. 

  • All numerical adjectives MUST go BEFORE the noun.

  • Almost all descriptive adjectives will go AFTER the noun.

  • There are some that can go before or after the noun. We will not address these at this point.

There are FIVE main types of adjectives

  • Adjectives that end with -o in the root form

  • Adjectives that end with -e in the root form

  • Adjectives that end with -dor in the root form

  • Adjectives that end with any consonant other than -dor in the root form

  • Adjectives that give a person's nationality

Adjectives that end with -e have TWO forms.  With these adjectives, you do not have to worry about gender. The only thing that matters with these adjectives is number(whether it is singular or plural.) There are only TWO forms with these types of adjectives. They are:

  • -e (for both masculine singular and feminine singular)

  • -es (for both masculine plural and feminine plural)

Adjectives that are Nationalities all have FOUR forms except for the ones that end with -e. Those only have two forms.  Below are a few examples. Also, nationalities in Spanish are capiltalized ONLY at the beginning of a sentence.

  • Cuban - cubano, cubana, cubanos, cubanas

  • English - inglés, inglesa, ingleses, inglesas

  • Spanish - español, española, españoles, españolas

  • German - alemán, alemana, alemanes, alemanas 

  • Canadian - canadiense, canadienses

  • -consonant + es (masc./fem. plural)
