36

Multiple Choice

extra nitrates in water cause

1

Algal blooms

2

Aquatic plants to die

3

Decrease biodiversity

4

Increase number of bacteria

37

Multiple Select

Algal blooms (Select all)

1

Reduce light levels in water

2

Cause Aquatic plants to die

3

Decrease biodiversity

4

Increase number of bacteria

38

Multiple Choice

What decreases biodiversity after nitrates enter water

ReduceD light levels in water

2

Fish dying

3

Increase in algae

4

Increase in number of bacteria

39

Multiple Choice

how do bacteria decrease biodiversity

1

by reducing light levels in water

2

Eat the fish

3

Eat dead algae & plants

4

Use up all the oxygen

40

Multiple Select

Why are chemical fertilisers used (select all)

1

Increase crop yield

2

Kill pests

3

Cause algal blooms

4

To leach into water

41

Chemical Fertilizers

  • Used to increase soil nitrate levels

  • Nitrates dissolve in water so can enter roots of plants

  • Plants use nitrates to make amino acids which are needed for protein synthesis

  • Animals also need amino acids for proteins synthesis; animals get amino acids by eating plants

42

Algal Blooms

  • Caused by nitrate leaching into waterways

  • This increase in nitrate causes algae populations to grow and form an algal bloom

  • The algal blooms blocks light, the reduced light levels kills aquatic plants

  • Bacteria in water eat dead plants and algae and increase in number

  • The increase in bacteria population reduces biodiversity as the bacteria use up the Oxygen available in the water

Multiple Choice

Pesticides are used to

1

Kill pests

2

Feed pests

3

Increase nitrate levels

4

Cause algal blooms

63

Multiple Choice

Bio accumulation is the

1

Build up toxins in body of organisms

2

Leaching of nitrates into waterways

3

Killing of pests with pesticide

4

Increase in biodiversity

64

Multiple Select

Select all which are true. Pesticides cause

1

Bioaccumulation

2

Increase in crop yield

3

A build up of toxins in organisms

4

An increase in toxicity as move up food chain

65

Pesticides

  • Are chemicals used to kill pests (Pests are organisms which damage crops)

  • Increase crop yield by protecting crops

  • Can lead to bioaccumultion - the build up of toxins in organisms over time

  • As pesticides are passed up food chains, toxicity increases and can reach lethal levels

Multiple Select

Select all of the alternatives to using chemicals to increase crop yield

1

Fertiliser

2

GM crops

3

Biological controls

4

Pesticides

72

Fill in the Blank

Biological control is the use of ________ to kill pests

73

Multiple Choice

GM crops means

1

Genetically modified

2

Greater Mass

3

Grows More

4

Genetically Matched

74

Multiple Choice

GM crops reduce need for fertiliser by

1

Growing larger/higher yield

2

Killing pests which eat them

3

Making their own nitrates

4

Having new DNA

75

Multiple Choice

GM crops reduce need for pesticides by

1

Growing larger/higher yield

2

Killing pests which eat them

3

Making their own nitrates

4

Having new DNA

76

Alternatives to chemicals

  • Genetically modified crops are an alternative to chemical fertilisers & pesticides

  • GM crops can be used to increase crop yield withOut needing as much fertiliser

  • GM crops can reduce need for chemical pesticides by having genes added which causes the crop to be poisonous

  • Biological controls can also be used instead of pesticides

  • A biological control is the use of living organisms (predators) to kill pests
