What is a fraction?
Fractions represent equal parts of a whole or a collection.
Fraction of a whole: When we divide a whole into equal parts, each part is a fraction of the whole.
3
Writing a Fraction
A fraction has two parts.
The number on the top of the line is called the numerator. It tells how many equal parts of the whole or collection are taken.
The number below the line is called the denominator. It shows the total divisible number of equal parts the whole into or the total number of equal parts which are there in a collection.
4
Proper Fraction: where the numerator is smaller than the denominator
5
Improper Fraction: where the numerator is larger than the denominator
6
Mixed Number: a whole number with a proper fraction
7

10
Adding/Subtracting Fractions
Fractions that have the same denominator (bottom number) can be added or subtracted by adding/subtracting the two numerators (top numbers)
11
Adding/subtracting Fractions
Fractions that have unlike denominators (are not the same bottom number) need to be changed into a common denominator
After you create a common denominator (they both have the same bottom number) then you can add/subtract the top numbers

The video above is going to discuss how to find a common denominator
13
