Ohio's Global Address

How can you describe the location of Ohio? You could describe Ohio as being part of the United States. This is Ohio’s “global address,” or its address on Earth. The United States also has a global address. It is part of a continent, or one of Earth’s seven great bodies of land, called North America.

Ohio and the United States

Now that you know Ohio’s global address, let’s see Ohio’s address as part of the United States. On the map below, the relative location of Ohio compared to Minnesota is southeast. The relative location of a place is where it is located compared to other places.

7

Ohio is in the Midwest, one region of the United States. A region is an area with common features that set it apart from other areas. The United States has six regions—the Northeast, Southeast, Midwest, Mountain, Southwest, and West. Look at the map below. Can you name all of the states in the Midwest?

9

Ohio and the Midwest

As you can see on the map, twelve states make up the Midwest region. Indiana and Michigan are next to Ohio. They share its boundaries, or borders. A boundary shows where one place ends and another place begins. The Midwest is mostly made up of large areas of flat land that are good for farming. Eastern Ohio is an area of hills and valleys. The soil here is not good for growing many crops. Water is also an important feature in the Midwest. Several large rivers, as well as four of the five Great Lakes, are in this region.

10

Ohio's Boundaries

Some of Ohio's boundaries, or borders, are natural. The Ohio River forms the southern border. To the north, part of the border is formed by Lake Erie. The rest of Ohio's borders are simply lines on a map. Geographers developed these lines based on a grid system.

Describing Relative Location

You can describe any place on Earth by telling its relative location. You may remember that relative location describes where a place is in relation to other places. For example, you could say that Akron is near Cleveland. You might describe Ohio as being east of Indiana. Relative location can help you locate physical characteristics. These are features created by nature, such as mountains or rivers. You can also tell the relative location of human characteristics. Human characteristics are features made by people, such as cities, bridges, dams, and roads. Two important map tools help identify relative location. The compass rose helps you find the direction of one place in relation to another. The map scale tells you how near or far places are from one another.

Renewable & Nonrenewable Resources

Some natural resources can be replaced for later use. These are renewable resources. A forest is an example of a renewable resource. New trees can grow in place of those that are cut down.

Other natural resources, such as oil, cannot be replaced. These are nonrenewable resources. Once a nonrenewable resource is used up, it can never be used again.

Minerals and Energy

Minerals are nonrenewable resources that are found in the ground. Salt, the first mineral ever mined in Ohio, is still mined today. Other mineral resources found in Ohio are gravel, clay, and iron.Coal, oil, and natural gas are other nonrenewable resources found in Ohio. They are burned as a source of heat and power. There were once large amounts of coal in eastern Ohio, but about 30 percent of the coal has been removed.

Resources Create Jobs

Natural resources help create jobs. When there are many jobs, it helps the economy. The economy is the way a country or other place produces or uses natural resources, goods, and services.Water is a natural resource that creates many jobs. For example, workers at water treatment plants make sure water is safe to drink. Other workers load goods onto barges, or large flat boats, along the Ohio River and Lake Erie.People and natural resources are both examples of productive resources. A productive resource is a resource that is used to make goods and services.

25

Conservation is the careful use of a natural resource. In Ohio, some people work to clean up pollution. Pollution is any substance that makes the air, water, or soil dirty. Many Ohioans are also protecting animals by saving the places they live to prevent the animals from becoming extinct, or dying out. For example, to help bald eagles in Ohio, their nesting areas are being protected.

Many have come to Ohio from more than 30 different countries around the world.People have come to Ohio from many countries, including India, China, and the Philippines. They also have come to Ohio from Mexico, Nicaragua, and other countries in Latin America, as well as from countries in Europe, South America, and Africa.

Festivals

People like to celebrate special events and holidays. The way people celebrate depends on their culture. Several fairs, festivals, and special events take place in Ohio to celebrate the heritage of people who live here. Heritage is the history and tradition that a group of people share.

Slide image

36

Ohio has many types of celebrations because people of different cultures have settled here. Native Americans celebrate their culture during “powwows” filled with music, dancing, and other activities. During the Piqua (PIH kwah) Heritage Festival, people set set up campsites and live as people did before 1840. The Old Time Farming Festival in Knox County celebrates farming.
