Lesson 27/Chapter 9: Movements in the Body
PT2-Portion
2
Locomotion
- is the type of movement where an organisms can change place to another.
3
Movement in Earthworm
- is usually seen moving in the soil on a rainy day(elongated body with no bones or limbs
-it has many ring-like segments that have muscles. These muscles help it to contract and expand its body to provide a push that helps the body to move forward.
-Setae- a special bristle-like structures used to grip the ground.
4
Movement in Snail
5
Snail
-Has a slimy body without bones and a shell for protection.
-It has a pair of tentacles with eyes at the tips of its shell.
-it moves with the help of a muscular organ known foot.
- It makes wave-like movements by expanding and contracting the muscles in the foot.
-It secretes a slimy substance known as the mucous that enables the snail to to move with ease.
6
Multiple Select
Movement in Earthworm has the following characteristics below. Check more than one
It has elongated body
It has tentacles
Repeated expansion and contraction of its body helps it to move
it has many ring-like segments that have muscles
7

is found in the underside of its body
to fix its rear part of the ground
10

Snail secretes a substance known as ______
tentacles
mucous
setae
fluid
11
Movement in Cockroach
12
Cockroach can walk, run, climb and even fly short distances
It is made up three parts
Head, thorax, abdomen
13
Parts of Cockroach
Thorax- is the middle part of the cockroach and bears two pairs of wings and three pairs of jointed legs for movement.
It has also a pair of sensitive antennae located at its head. It enables to sense and smell its surroundings.
Cockroaches walk in a very unique manner moving three legs at a time.
14
Movement in Fish
*The body of fish is designed for swimming.
It's shape is like a boat or airplane- thicker in the middle and tapers at the both ends. Such a body is called streamlined body.
-The streamlined body shape allows water to move easily around the body and offers least resistance to its flow.
15
Parts and functions of Fish
A fish swims primarily with the help if fins. It helps maintaining the balance of the body and changing direction while swimming.
A fish uses its tail fin which moves side to side in a zigzag movement pushes the water and propels the fish forward also called the caudal fin.
A fish also has a sac-like structure in its body called the swim-bladder, which is filled with air and keeps the fish afloat.

23
Movement in Birds
Most birds can fly, can even walk, hop or run.
Some birds such as ducks, geese, and swans can even swim in water.
Birds have a streamlined body, which makes it easy for them to move through the air. The air can easily cut through the sides of the body and offers least resistance.
The bones of most birds are hollow.Hollow bones make the body lightweight and fit for flying.
24
Flightless Birds
Birds with heavy bodies, such as ostriches, penguins, and emus, cannot fly.
Moreover for Birds that can Fly
**The forelimbs of birds are modified to form wings for flight. The body is covered with feathers. It will keep them warm while flying in the height.
-The chest muscles are very strong that enable birds to flap their wings when flying.
25
Movement in Snake
Snakes slither or crawl on the ground in a wave-like motion. They can move forward very fast but not in a straight line.
-They have a long and strong backbone with interconnected muscles that are joined to the backbone and the ribs.
- The backbone snakes are very flexible. It usually move in a wave-like motion and press against the ground with the help of scales for push forward.
26
Movement of Human
- Human walks, run and jump from one place to another. We eat, talk and laugh by moving our hands and mouth.
- We respond to questions by nodding our head, moving our shoulders or by gesture through our hands.
- Humans are vertebrates, the bones are present within the body form an endoskeleton. The skeleton and muscles are involved in both locomotion and movements.
